Many Dominican Republic residents can be eligible for treatment abroad under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Unfortunately this right is not available to everyone. If you have an existing condition then as per HIPAA your health insurance will automatically be terminated upon arrival in the Dominican Republic unless you have a valid visa. A Dominican Republic traveler's health affidavit will usually indicate that you will have access to healthcare in the Dominican Republic if you require it.
The most important requirement of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is that all healthcare visits and hospital stays must be covered. In most instances this will cover emergency medical care. It may also cover prescription medication and non-medical services such as psychotherapy. Before travelling to the Dominican Republic ensure you ask your insurance company if your medications and appointments are covered by the policy. Also remember to ensure you read the fine print of your policy carefully so you know exactly what is not covered. There are many options available from major international insurance companies.
Another requirement of HIPAA is that a healthcare practitioner must be reached twenty-four hours a days, seven days a semaine. This can only be a requirement if you consult with a health care practitioner on a private health care provider's private list. Private medical practitioners are not recognized by the Dominican Republic government. Therefore, all medication and medical treatment must be provided through the Dominican Republic approved HMO or PO system. If you do not adhere to this requirement then your medical insurance will be terminated upon arrival and you will have to pay for alternative health care.
After you have received all documentation required to travel to Dominican Republic, it's a good idea to complete the visa paperwork. There are three main sources from which you can obtain a visa, they are the Dominican Republic government, the embassies of the country of your origin and US consulates. You can also obtain a visa from the nearest airport as long as the passport that you hold has been validated by the Passport Office. The process for obtaining a visa is faster than applying for an individual visa. This is why the Dominican Republic is a popular choice when it comes to family travel.
Remember once you have arrived in the Dominican Republic, you will still need to obtain a health insurance (hipaa) before entering the country. A Dominican Republic Health Insurance Card (HOCC) will be issued to you. You will need to provide your date of birth and social security number. Many of the Dominicans are quite comfortable with the idea of going abroad to receive medical treatment and there is no need for you to worry because you will be protected by the Dominican Republic health insurance (hipaa).
